Vatna / Maiyaan Ceremony

Vatna (Maiyaan) Ceremony in Punjabi Weddings

What Is the Vatna or Maiyaan Ceremony?

Vatna, also known as Maiyaan, is the Punjabi version of the Haldi ceremony where turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom to purify and prepare them for marriage.

The term “Maiyaan” is more commonly used in Punjabi Sikh weddings.

When Is It Held?

Vatna or Maiyaan is usually held one or two days before the wedding, often in the morning.

Separate ceremonies are typically held at the bride’s and groom’s homes.

Who Typically Celebrates It?

Vatna/Maiyaan is celebrated in:

  • Sikh Punjabi weddings
  • Hindu Punjabi weddings

It is less common outside Punjabi communities.

What Happens During the Vatna Ceremony?

Family members apply turmeric paste to the bride or groom while traditional wedding songs are sung. The setting is intimate and joyful. The bride or groom may sit on a low stool while relatives take turns applying the paste.

Yellow attire and floral décor are common.

Is It Optional or Regional?

Vatna/Maiyaan is regional to Punjabi weddings, though similar turmeric rituals (Haldi) are common in many Hindu weddings across India. The name and style are specific to Punjabi culture.
